📝 Edit Excel & Word Files Directly in File Manager
Firm Users can open and edit Excel (.xlsx) and Word (.docx) files directly in Client Hub File Manager. There's no need to download the file, make updates, and upload it again.
This makes it faster to update documents and spreadsheets while keeping everything in one place.
🚀 What's New
Previously, if a Firm User needed to update an Excel or Word file in File Manager, they had to:
- Download the file
- Make changes on their computer
- Upload the updated file back into Client Hub
Now, Firm Users can:
- Open supported files directly from File Manager
- Edit them in Microsoft Word for the web or Microsoft Excel for the web
- Have changes saved back to the file automatically
📂 How to Edit Files in File Manager
- Go to Client Workspace > File Manager.
- Open the folder where the file is stored.
- Click the .docx or .xlsx file.
- In the file preview panel, click Edit in Microsoft Word for the web or Edit in Microsoft Excel for the web.
- Make your changes in the browser.
- When you're done, close the tab and return to Client Hub.
Your updates save automatically, so there's no need to re-upload the file.
👀 What to Expect
When editing a supported file:
- The file opens in a new browser tab
- The editor launches in Microsoft Word for the web or Microsoft Excel for the web
- Changes are saved automatically
- Changes are saved directly to the original file in File Manager, so you won't see a new or duplicate file after editing.
🔐 Permissions
Firm Users can edit Excel and Word files directly from File Manager using Microsoft Word for the web or Microsoft Excel for the web.
Client Users can also edit supported files, but only in a specific context: when a Firm User has attached the file directly to a Client Task and set it up as a task requiring the client to complete and mark as done. In that workflow, the client can open and edit the attachment from within the task. This editing capability applies only to files attached within that Client Task — files stored in the Client Shared Folder or other File Manager locations are not editable by Client Users.
✅ Best Practices
- Use this feature when you need to make quick updates to Excel or Word files stored in File Manager
- Refresh File Manager if you do not immediately see the latest changes
- Avoid having multiple people edit the same file at the same time to help prevent version conflicts
💡 Example
To update a Word document stored in Client Workspace > File Manager, click the file and then select Edit in Microsoft Word for the web from the file preview panel.
To update an Excel spreadsheet, select Edit in Microsoft Excel for the web instead.
🎉 Summary
Firm Users can edit Excel and Word files directly in Client Hub File Manager without downloading and re-uploading them. Client Users can edit files attached to a Client Task when the task is set up to require their completion. This helps keep file updates simple, organized, and efficient.
