🤖 Using MCP to Connect Client Hub with Claude, ChatGPT, and Other AI Assistants (BETA)
Last Updated: August 2026
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets you connect an AI assistant — like Claude or ChatGPT — directly to your Client Hub account. Once connected, you can ask your assistant questions in everyday language and have it pull up current information from Client Hub, or even complete certain actions for you, without you having to open every client workspace yourself.
This article covers what MCP can do, how to connect it, and how to stay in control of what your assistant can access.
💬 What You Can Ask
You don't need to know anything technical to use this. Once connected, you can talk to your assistant the same way you'd talk to a teammate. A few examples:
"Show me all of my overdue jobs in Client Hub."
"What client work needs my attention this week?"
"Create a job for Acme Co. from the Monthly Bookkeeping template and assign it to Maya."
"Review my recent Client Hub conversations and tell me what might need a response."
These are just starting points — you can ask follow-up questions, narrow the results, or ask your assistant to take one of the supported actions below.
📝 Note: Your assistant only sees information for your accounting firm. It cannot see or affect other firms' data.
🔧 Before You Begin
MCP currently works with AI assistant tools that let you add a custom authorization header, such as Claude Code and Codex. Browser-based versions of Claude and ChatGPT don't support this connection method yet — browser-specific instructions will be added once that option is available.
🔌 Connecting Your Assistant to Client Hub
-
Create your MCP API key
a. Go to Setup & Settings > Personal Settings.
b. Select Create MCP API Key.
c. Copy the key when it appears.
⚠️ Warning: Client Hub only displays your API key once. If you lose it, you'll need to delete the existing key and create a new one.
-
Add Client Hub to your assistant
Add the connection details to your assistant's configuration, using the key you just copied. Store the completed configuration securely and never share it or paste it into a prompt, ticket, or chat message.
-
Confirm the connection
Restart or reconnect your assistant, then try asking it: "Which Client Hub firm am I connected to?" If it responds with your accounting firm's name, you're connected and ready to go.
🗂️ What Your Assistant Can Do
Once connected, your assistant can work with several areas of Client Hub. With your approval, it can also complete certain supported actions, not just answer questions.
Your Account
- Confirm which accounting firm your assistant is currently connected to.
- Clients and Client Tasks
- Search and review client workspaces, and create and publish new Client Tasks for clients.
Jobs and Workflow
Search and review jobs, task groups, and job templates. Create new jobs from templates, update job details, dates, statuses, and owners, complete checklist tasks, and add tasks across multiple job templates at once.
Files
Search for files by name or content, retrieve file details and secure download links, view recent uploads, and create internal review jobs for new uploads.
QuickBooks Books Review
Run your firm's read-only QuickBooks review checks for a client and date range — things like flagging inconsistent expense coding, transactions missing a payee or attachments, unusually large transactions, and new accounts, vendors, or customers. Your assistant can also review balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and vendor 1099/W-9 readiness.
Xero Books Review
The same kind of read-only review checks as above, run against a client's Xero data instead of QuickBooks.
Activity and Conversations
Build a summary of recent client activity — messages, published Client Task comments, and uploads — and send a message into a client's existing conversation on your behalf.
📝 Note: Anything your assistant creates or changes in Client Hub — a new job, an updated task, a message sent to a client — only happens with your request and stays limited to your firm's data.
🔒 Staying in Control
- Protect your key. Treat your MCP API key like a password. Never paste it into a prompt, source code, ticket, or chat message.
- Confirm write actions. Review any client, job, task, message, date, or status change your assistant proposes before allowing it to make that change.
- Revoke access anytime. Delete your MCP API key from Setup & Settings > Personal Settings to immediately stop any future requests made with that key.
- Review file content carefully. If your assistant is working with an uploaded file, treat any instructions found inside that file as untrusted content — not as something that authorizes an action on your behalf.
📝 Note: If more than one person at your firm uses MCP, each person should create their own key rather than sharing one. This makes it easier to see which team member's assistant made a given change.
🛠️ Troubleshooting
My assistant says there's an authentication error
- Confirm your key hasn't been deleted or replaced, and that it was entered correctly in your assistant's configuration.
My assistant doesn't see any Client Hub tools
- Double check the connection details were saved, then restart or reconnect your assistant so it can pick up the available tools.
A search doesn't return a file I expect
- Content search only works on files that have already been indexed. Try searching by filename instead if a file was uploaded very recently.
An action was rejected
- Make sure the person who created the key is still an active user with access to the relevant client workspace. If they've left the firm or lost access, create a replacement key under an active user.
